Plagiarism

What is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is a heavily weighted word for students. Mohawk College Library Staff can help to demystify what it is and how to avoid it.

Plagiarism is the act of using someone else's words, data or ideas without attributing the source. Words, data and ideas are the intellectual property of the content creator. When you use someone else's intellectual property you need to properly attribute the work. Plagiarism, whether deliberate or unintentional has real consequences.

You can avoid the consequences of plagiarism by supporting your opinions with evidence, keeping track of ideas and where you got them and citing your sources correctly.
